We will start with our Maintenance Intern, Victor Cruz. Here is an introduction from Victor: 

"My name is Victor Cruz and I’ve been working with the district since I started high school. I enjoy hiking, lifting, sports and working. When I’m not doing any of those things, I’m cherishing time with my loved ones."

On November 11, 2025, the Garfield County School District 16 Board of Education thanked Kim Whelan for her 4 1/2 years of service on the Board. The Board then swore in Brent Baker, Samuel Stewart, and Hunter Long, who were elected by acclamation. Thank you to Kim for your years of service to the students and staff of our school district, and thank you to our new directors for filling important roles on our Board.

Kindergarten students explored Cottonwood Park this week. They learned how to use tools to explore, sort things in the soil, and to explore trees.

CFL students learned all about bus safety the past couple weeks. G16 schools are thankful for Mrs. Donna Nichols, G16 Bus Driver and graphic designer, who designed a bus safety program for our students!

The Grand Valley Educational Foundation would like to thank the Town of Parachute, Alpine Bank, Jesse Youngs, Rachael and Cody Blair, and everyone who participated in our Festi-Fall Cornhole Tournament. We had 16 teams participate, raised $740 to go towards scholarships for graduating students and grants for teachers, and we had a blast! Hope to see you all next year.

G16 successfully implemented the Shark Tank Projects! Thanks to Aspen Community Foundation, GVHS students pitched ideas to a panel of community "sharks" or judges. After two rounds of presentations and project proposals, the sharks chose three projects to fund. One of these projects was a community mural. If you haven't seen the mural, check it out at the base of the pedestrian bridge in Wasson-McKay park. Thanks to Lucas Cotto, Craig Cotter, Ean Olmstead, and Jane Castillo-Marioni for the project proposal and organization. Thanks to the artists: JJ Cotto, Kyria Chan, David Fabela, Isis Alcerro, Craig Cotter, Riley Mooney, Yareli Sarellano, Samantha Espinoza, Edna Gomez Mora, Donavan K, Alexa Navarro, Gwendolly Torres, and Lucas Cotto!

Battlement Mesa will have them on July 14th and July 15th from 4-6pm. Rifle will have them on July 17th and July 18th from 4-6pm.  Please check the flyer for more information.

Important: A parent or legal guardian must be present to sign the required CHSAA paperwork, including the medical history form. No student may participate in sports without this completed documentation.

The Parachute Branch Library is currently under construction, but we are still open to the public. Patrons can pick up reserved items, return items, and browse our tiny temporary collection. We have a Print Station available for printing, copying, faxing, and scanning.

Patrons can still pick up a free yard sign to show their library love!  

We are holding all of our programs at various sites in the community - the Rec Center, Historical Schoolhouse, the Family Resource Center, the Funky Bear, and others. 

The Summer Reading Challenge starts June 1. We have so many cool activities planned, starting with a Splashdown at the Splash Park during the Fishing Derby on Saturday, June 7.

Measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccination remains the most important tool for preventing measles.  With measles cases increasing nationwide, public health encourages people to review their vaccination records to ensure they are protected. Anyone unsure of their vaccination status should contact their healthcare provider or Garfield County Public Health at 970-625-5200 x 8135.

Meet Lucas Cotto, a senior at Grand Valley High School. L-U-C-A-S if anyone wants to chant his name. He's been part of the community for more than 7 years now; he moved from Chicago, Illinois, to Colorado. He plays football for the Cardinals and does track and field. Things Lucas loves: conversations, old people, and a good chocolate ice cream. He's the new Public Information Intern, working alongside Nicole Loschke. His goals are to help improve public information, community events, and help high schoolers be more motivated to be part of the community.

Join Team AVSC snowboard to bring a friend day, a community event on Sunday 9/29. Bring a friend to showcase what we AVSC has to offer. Friends, siblings, and parents are all welcome to join. AVSC will have some of your favorite coaches at the super tramp, fly bed and side yard/mini ramp. Coach Eric will have 8 skateboards pressed for kids to choose their design and have them cut on site.

GVHS Key Club Presents: The Winter Clothing Drive! February 20 - March 1. Bring your donations to any school and drop them in the box! A raffle ticket will be given for each donation. The winner will be announced at the end of the drive. Items to bring: coats, hoodies, gloves, hats, long-sleeved shirts, pants. Donations will be given to the School-Based Family Resource Center.

Good school attendance means...Elementary students read well by the end of third grade, middle schoolers pass important courses, high schoolers stay on track for graduation, college students earn their degrees, workers succeed in their jobs. Too many absences, excused or unexcused, can keep students from succeeding in school and in life. How many are too many? 10% of the school year, that's 18 missed days or 2 days a month, can knock students off track.

Hoop Vision Basketball Camp at Grand Valley Recreation Center! Register before February 1st for the early bird special (receive $30 off). Hoop vision is excited about our second camp at Grand Valley Recreation Center June 3-6. 3rd - 4th grade: 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. 6th - 8th grade: 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm. Hoop vision conducts camps throughout Colorado and even abroad, as we are in Costa Rica and trained their national teams! We focus on fundamentals of the game. Shooting, ball handling, defense, offensive moves, screening/cutting, passing/layups. When a student misses 2 days a month: they will miss 20 days a year; they will miss 30 hours of math over the school year; they will miss 60 hours of reading and writing over the school year; they will miss over a year of school by graduation. When a student misses 4 days a month: they will miss 40 days a year; they will miss 60 hours of math over the school year; they will miss 120 hours of reading and writing over the school year; they will miss over 2 years of school by graduation.

CFL preschool classes experienced a "Turkey Talk" program earlier this month. G16's Outdoor Education Coordinator Ari Philipson and volunteer LeRoy Gutierrez visited preschool classrooms to speak to kids about turkeys. Philipson and Gutierrez let the students hear their best turkey calls and talked to students about colors and patterns of turkeys. Students were able to feel real turkey feathers, use different turkey calls, and demonstrate their best turkey camouflage. See the CFL Facebook page for more photos.

Las clases preescolares de CFL experimentaron un programa de "Charla de Pavo" este mes. El coordinador de educación al aire libre del G16, Ari Philipson, y el voluntario LeRoy Gutiérrez visitaron las aulas preescolares para hablar a los niños sobre pavos. Philipson y Gutiérrez dejaron que los estudiantes escucharan sus mejores llamadas de pavo y hablaron con los estudiantes sobre colores y patrones de pavos. Busy weekend ahead! The 40th Annual Craft Fair will be held this Saturday, November 18th at Grand Valley High School from 9 am to 4 pm. The 3rd Annual Who Village Christmas Market will also take place this Saturday next to Clark's Market from 10 am to 4 pm. The Town of Parachute is also hosting Holidays in Grand Valley from 5:15 pm to 8:00 pm.

G16 Gazette- October 2023

During the week of September 25th, Garfield County will begin repaving the CR300 river bridge.  There will be temporary one lane closures and traffic holds.   Weather permitting, the road construction should be completed by September 29th.

3:00 p.m. at the District Administration Office/Board of Directors meeting room located at 0460 Stone Quarry Road, Parachute, Colorado.

NO BUSINESS OTHER THAN THAT STATED IN THE NOTICE OF THE MEETING SHALL BE TRANSACTED UNLESS THE ITEM IS REASONABLY RELATED TO THE SUBJECT MATTER ON THE NOTICE OR AN EXIGENCY EXISTS. IN ADDITION, ALL MEMBERS MUST BE PRESENT AND CAST A UNANIMOUS VOTE TO AMEND THE AGENDA.
